Shericka Jackson celebrates her bronze medal at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo Japan
KINGSTON, Jamaica –
Jamaica earned two bronze medals this morning from the 200m performances of Bryan Levell and Shericka Jackson, at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo Japan.
The men’s final saw Levell of Jamaica going up against the likes of Letsile Tebogo of Botswana and the USA pair of Noah Lyles and Kenneth Bednarek.
The race started with Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain having the best reaction of 0.126, but that advantage was short-lived as the big four of Tebogo, Bednarek, Levell and Lyles rubbed shoulders coming off the bend.
With 60-metres to go, Lyles had the gold in his sight and with focus, determination and lengthening strides, he took the gold in 19.52 seconds. Silver went Bednarek with a season best 19.58 and bronze to Levell with is new personal best of 19.64.
In the women’s equivalent, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden completed the sprint double winning the gold in a world-leading time of 21.68. Jefferson-Wooden, who had won the women’s 100m finals earlier in the championship, came off the curve with a half-metre lead over Jackson, but as they hit the straight, Jefferson-Wooden found another gear to win by five-metres.
Amy Hunt of Great Britian finished strongly to take the silver in 22.14s with Jackson third in 22.18s
Jamaica now have eight medals: one gold, four sliver and three bronze.
